Yablonovitch was awarded the Rank Prize in Optoelectronics from the Rank Prize Funds for his immense contributions toward research in optoelectronics, notably the widely-used concept that strained semiconductor lasers would have superior performance owing to reduced valence band (hole) effective mass, in February 2014.

J. Wu was named as a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award from the U.S. National Science Foundation in December 2013 for his pursuit of innovative research in science and technology and will receive his award at the Washington D.C. ceremony in 2014.

E. Yablonovitch was elected as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society of London by the Royal Society for his broad contributions to optics and electronics. At the Induction Ceremony, Professor Yablonovitch will sign the very same parchment book that Newton, Maxwell and all other Fellows have signed since the beginning of the Society over 350 years ago.
