The Center for E³S is thrilled to be hosting research interns and visiting faculty from a wide variety of institutions across the country. The Center is hosting 85 students and community college faculty in 7 educational programs across 3 member institutions, greatly surpassing the number of visitors from any previous summer.

In the second week of June, the E³S Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program for upper-division undergraduates will welcome its 11 interns at UC Berkeley, 2 interns at MIT and 1 intern at Stanford.

The E³S REU interns at UC Berkeley are:

Yee Ling Gan, an EECS sophomore from MIT, is hosted by Prof. C. Chang-Hasnain, Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences Department, and mentored by Linda Li.

Christopher Gayton, an EECS senior from UTEP, Long Beach, is hosted by Prof. A. Javey, Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences Department, and mentored by Dr. Tania Roy.

Terrell Glenn, a Physics sophomore from Morehouse, is hosted by Prof. S. Salahuddin, Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences Department, and mentored by Dr. Long You.

Justin Laguardia, an Electrical Engineering junior from UC Davis, is hosted by Prof. J. Bokor, Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences Department, and mentored by Yang Yang.

Augustus Lang, a Materials Engineering senior from USC, is hosted by Prof. A. Javey, Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences Department, and mentored by Dr. Tania Roy.

Christopher Strickland, a Physics senior from NYU Poly, is hosted by Prof. S. Salahuddin, Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences Department, and co-mentored by V. Ganapati and Asif Khan.

Jack Wilson, a Engineering Physics sophomore from Brown, is hosted by Prof. M. Wu, Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences Department, and mentored by Michael Eggleston.

The partnership with the MIT Summer Research Program enables the Center to support the following REU interns at MIT.

Michael Statt, a Chemical Engineering sophomore from Cornell, is hosted by Prof. E. Fitzgerald, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and mentored by Ryan Iutzi.

Erick Romo-Mendoza, an EECS senior from UTEP, is hosted by Prof. J. del Alamo, Department of Electrical Engineering, and mentored by Dr. Alon Vardy.

For the first time, one intern will be supported by the Center at Stanford:

Joseph Finley, an EECS senior from UC Berkeley, is hosted by Prof. H.-S. P. Wong, Department of Electrical Engineering, and mentored by Dr. Ji Cao.

At UC Berkeley, the Center’s Transfer-to-Excellence (TTE) Program hosts community college students either as research interns in the TTE Research (TTE REU) Program or as summer students in the TTE Cross-Enrollment (TTE X-Enroll) Program.

The Center’s partnership with two other NSF-funded centers at UC Berkeley, Synthetic Biology Engineering Research Center and Center of Integrated Nanomechnical Systems, is enabling 14 students from community colleges across California to engage in research this summer; 5 of these interns will be completing projects within E³S.

Kevin Crabble, an EECS major from Diablo Valley College, is hosted and mentored by Mr. J. Clarkson in the Marvell Nanofabrication Lab.

This summer the E³S Teacher Fellows Program will host two Bay Area community college faculty members at UC Berkeley. Additionally, a new program for faculty is being introduced, the Context-Based Research Experiences for Community College Faculty Program is in partnership with the UC Berkeley Mechanical Engineering department and will host 4 community college faculty members.
